Your Takeuchi won't start — the ignition switch is dead, intermittent, or the key won't turn. The switch body is cracked, the terminals are corroded, or the preheat circuit has failed and the glow plugs won't fire. On a diesel machine, no preheat means no cold starts. The Takeuchi dealer wants $100 to $128 for a replacement ignition switch. That's a steep price for a switch you can replace in 15 minutes.
We sell the direct replacement for $59.00 — saving you over $40 vs the dealer. This is the same specification switch: 6 screw terminals matching the OEM wiring harness, 4-position operation with a dedicated spring-loaded preheat circuit, zinc die-cast body, and canopy/waterproof design. Includes 2 heavy duty metal keys. Replaces Takeuchi part numbers 1700100072, 17001-00023, and 17001-00052.
This is NOT a generic 4-terminal ignition switch. The Takeuchi ignition system requires 6 screw terminals to support the dedicated preheat (glow plug) circuit. A standard "Acc-Off-Run-Start" switch from an auto parts store has 4 terminals and will not work — it does not have the preheat circuit that fires the glow plugs before cranking.
Takeuchi ignition switches are "Left-Hand Preheat" — you turn the key left to activate the glow plugs (preheat), then release the key back to the center "Off" position, then turn right through "On" to "Start" to crank the engine. The preheat position is spring-loaded — the key returns to center when you release it. This is essential for cold-starting diesel engines, especially in cold weather. Without a functioning preheat circuit, you are relying on ambient heat alone to ignite the fuel — which may work in summer but will leave you stranded in winter.
Ignition switches on construction equipment take a beating. They're exposed to dust, vibration, moisture, mud, and operators with dirty gloves forcing keys into corroded cylinders. Common failure modes include:
On a canopy (open cab) machine, the switch is directly exposed to rain, snow, and wash-down water, accelerating corrosion and failure.
This is the same specification 6-terminal ignition switch used in Takeuchi TB and TL series machines. The zinc die-cast body resists corrosion, and the canopy/waterproof design is built for machines without enclosed cabs. All 6 screw terminals match the OEM wiring harness — tag your existing wires, disconnect the old switch, connect the new one terminal by terminal, and you're starting again. The entire replacement takes 15–20 minutes with basic hand tools.
The 1700100072 ignition switch fits virtually all Takeuchi TB (excavator) and TL (track loader) series machines:
⚠️ Verify Takeuchi part number 1700100072 (or 17001-00023 / 17001-00052) in your parts manual before ordering. Some newer Takeuchi models may use a different switch with a different terminal count or key type. Contact us with your machine model and serial number to confirm.
Can I use a standard 4-terminal ignition switch?
No. A standard 4-terminal switch does not have the dedicated preheat circuit. The Takeuchi wiring harness has 6 wires that connect to the switch — a 4-terminal switch will leave the glow plugs disconnected. Without preheat, cold starting will be very difficult or impossible, especially in winter.
What keys come with this switch?
This switch includes 2 heavy duty metal keys. They are compatible with the standard Takeuchi key profile used across TB and TL series machines.
Will this work on a cab machine (enclosed cab) or only canopy?
The "canopy" designation refers to the waterproof design, but this switch works on both canopy (open) and enclosed cab Takeuchi machines. The switch body and wiring connections are the same — the only difference is that canopy machines benefit more from the weather-resistant design.
My glow plug light doesn't come on when I turn the key left. Is it the switch?
Possibly. It could be the switch, the glow plug relay, the glow plugs themselves, or a wiring issue. If the light doesn't illuminate with the old switch AND the new switch, the problem is likely downstream — check the glow plug relay, fuse, and wiring. If the light works with the new switch but not the old one, the old switch has a burnt preheat contact.
